About this artwork
There are moments that a photographer cannot plan. They can only encounter them.
That evening, I found myself in a small cigar shop in Midtown Manhattan. While customers were still being served at the front, things were winding down in the back. Some of the men, who had just been rolling cigars, sat down together, played cards, smoked, and relaxed.
As a stranger, one doesn't normally enter such a place. But that evening I was received with great… openness. For a brief moment, I was no longer just the observer with the camera, but was allowed to be part of this community.
After Work was born out of this trust.
