About this artwork
This urban landscape painting is called Castlefield No. 5 because it is the fifth version the artist has painted of this same scene, that of canal leisure boats moored in 18th Century canal basin (a site of special historical interest) in Castlefield, Manchester, UK. The areas is full of old warehouses and wharves which attracted the artist to paint it, yet since those earlier versions the scene has changed dramatically in just a few years and there… are now many new tall skyscrapers that have been built in the background several of them around 170m tall and so the artist resolved to paint a new version that included them. For this work, he was obliged to increase the height of the canvas he worked with from the usual landscape format of 70cm x 50cm to a square of 70x70cm in order to accommodate them. This work is presently unavailable due to being exhibited until Feb 2027
« I am more interested in capturing emotion than representation. When I paint my landscapes, I become a sort of nympholeptic camera. »
Michael Gutteridge is a British painter whose works have been extensively exhibited throughout the United Kingdom. His cityscapes combine diverse influences and involve spontaneous forms of distortion expressed via color, proportion, perspective, and an incongruous juxtaposition of styles. Often, Gutteridge endeavors to convey existentially disorientating feelings as well as other types of emotion and general sensual vibrancy. He creates using acrylics and ink on wood.
