About this artwork

A new painting by Michael Gutteridge of a street in his home city featuring a cryptically distorted array of characters, one of which is a loose self-portrait. Behind them are three adjoining public houses. There is much interest in the emotionally vibrant effects of colour. It is entitled No. 3 because it is the third painting the artist has made of this same scene. It was an evolving project painted on and off over a period of many years during… which experimental ideas were tried, modified and reformed until the artist was happy with the result. It is painted in acrylics and occasionally inks on compressed wooden fibreboard and was completed in late February 2023.

Michael Gutteridge is a British painter whose works have been extensively exhibited throughout the United Kingdom. His cityscapes combine diverse influences and involve spontaneous forms of distortion expressed via color, proportion, perspective, and an incongruous juxtaposition of styles. Often, Gutteridge endeavors to convey existentially disorientating feelings as well as other types of emotion and general sensual vibrancy. He creates using acrylics and ink on wood.
