About this artwork
This is a painting of a Tram Station in St. Peter's Square, Manchester, United Kingdom. It's called number 8 because it is the 8th version of this same scene that the artist has painted over the years, all of which have been sold to private collectors. As well as being excited by the architectural contrasts, the artist finds this particular scene a vibrant, stimulating topic for expressing the vision of city life. This was painted over a long period… of several years and when he began it the area looked different from when he finished it in that, in the meantime, the area was redesigned and new skyscrapers in the distance had been built! The artist frequently reworked the colour harmonies and the crowd details in this painting before he achieved the results he wanted. Presently unavailable due to being exhibited until Feb 2027.
Painted is on 50cmmx70cm, primed hardboard using acrylic paints, some liquid acrylic inks, and was developed in several layers over time, as alluded to above.
« I am more interested in capturing emotion than representation. When I paint my landscapes, I become a sort of nympholeptic camera. »
Michael Gutteridge is a British painter whose works have been extensively exhibited throughout the United Kingdom. His cityscapes combine diverse influences and involve spontaneous forms of distortion expressed via color, proportion, perspective, and an incongruous juxtaposition of styles. Often, Gutteridge endeavors to convey existentially disorientating feelings as well as other types of emotion and general sensual vibrancy. He creates using acrylics and ink on wood.
