About this artwork
Let me take you on a little journey with this piece. Many years ago, in a galaxy not so far away, I created my very first painting of a woman with a veil. It was only my second oil painting ever, and let me tell you, I was over the moon with how it turned out! That piece held a special place in my heart, a symbol of the excitement and pride that came with a new artistic achievement.
Fast forward 35 years, and I decided it was time for a sequel.… But this time, instead of “borrowing” an image from a magazine, I worked with a live model and brought to the canvas all the experience I’ve gathered over the years. The process was a joy, a beautiful mix of nostalgia and new challenges.
This painting is a testament to growth, to the passage of time, and to the enduring inspiration that certain ideas hold over us. And who knows—maybe 35 years from now, I’ll be creating a third version of “The Veil,” bringing yet another layer of experience to this ongoing story... ;)
Michel Devanakis is a contemporary figurative painter whose work is built around the idea of the threshold. A state of inner tension where opposing forces coexist without resolution.
Born to Greek parents in Cameroon and shaped by a life across different cultural environments, his work reflects a sustained interest in boundaries. Between visible and invisible, private and public, control and emergence.
After more than two decades in graphic design and illustration, he turned fully to painting in 2013. This background remains visible in the precision of his compositions and the clarity of his visual structure.
He develops each painting through a process that moves from digital construction to direct execution. The result is a controlled balance between intention and unpredictability, where each image holds tension without forcing resolution.
Based in Greece, his work has been exhibited internationally and is held in private collections across Europe.
