About this artwork
In this mischievous work, Mihov probes whether capitalism and wealth have supplanted traditional religious or non-monetary beliefs in our society. Growing up near Rila Monastery in Bulgaria, Mihov was deeply influenced by its spiritual presence, as his grandparents lived just half an hour away. The work’s blue background is a nod to art history and the fact that blue has long been associated with the rich and divine, from the ancient Egyptians who… discovered it, through to the traditions of depicting Virgin Mary. The artwork features a playful depiction of Benjamin Franklin as not just a historical figure, but as an iconostas and the face of our modern capitalism, an icon of a new religion.
Mihov is a painter, digital artist, and visual artist whose background bridges the worlds of global finance and post-communist Bulgarian art, enriched by training in both Orthodox iconography and contemporary portraiture. His Cerebral Figurative Expressionism fuses oil, watercolor, collage, and precious metals into layered canvases that intertwine capitalist symbols with spiritual iconography, resulting in visually striking, analytical works. Mihov’s art invites viewers to reflect deeply on personal values within a capitalist culture, provoking both introspection and emotional engagement.
