About this artwork
At the center of the canvas sits a figure defined by both rhythm and stillness. She wears a garment of bold, alternating stripes that catch the cool light of the room, grounding her presence against the darkening air. Her fingers are arched with practiced grace over the strings of a lute, as if the notes are being drawn directly from the silence of the evening.
Behind her, a window stands open to an unobstructed sky. The moon hangs as a singular,… luminous anchor in the void, casting its glow. Her head is turned away from the viewer in a gesture of quiet redirection; she does not look at the strings she plays, but instead tilts her gaze toward the light outside. It is a study of harmony between the tangible world of wood and fabric and the distant, unreachable glow of the celestial.
Born in Alexandria, Egypt, Nagui's passion for painting blossomed during his college years. While pursuing his medical degree, he concurrently enrolled in the independent fine art study program at the University of Alexandria Atelier. This dual pursuit of art and medicine would profoundly shape his artistic perspective.
His early work quickly gained recognition. In 1973, he held his inaugural solo exhibition at the University Physician's Club, followed by another in 1975 at the prestigious French Cultural Center in Alexandria.
Upon immigrating to the United States, Nagui embarked on a career in psychiatry, a profession he believes has significantly influenced his approach to painting.
Artistic Practice: Nagui maintains a prolific output, annually producing a substantial body of work that includes medium and large-size paintings, alongside numerous smaller pieces and drawings.
