About this artwork
Too Much Joy (Recto / Verso)
Some moments are simply too full of life to be captured from a single point of view.
With Too Much Joy, I wanted to preserve the feeling of movement, freedom, and pure delight in its entirety. Instead of choosing between the front or the back of the figure, I painted both. The front view appears on the front of the canvas, while the back view is painted on the reverse side of the very same piece.
This decision transformed… the painting into something more than an image. It invites the viewer to move around the work, discovering it from different angles, much like experiencing a real person in motion.
I am drawn to fleeting moments that often go unnoticed. Through loose brushwork, soft light, and minimal detail, I aim to capture not the appearance of a moment, but its feeling.
For me, this work is a celebration of joy, spontaneity, and the beauty of being fully present.

Nicole Schellekens, working under the name Nicole S. Pousset, (after my grandfather) is a Belgian painter with a background in graphic design, now based in Antwerp.
She paints with expressive, loose brushwork, blending figuration and suggestion to capture people in motion, illuminated by delicate contrasts of light and shadow.
Embracing simplicity and emotional depth, her style reflects influences from Rembrandt to Rubens while inviting viewers to pause and reflect. Her art radiates optimism, tenderness, and the quiet beauty of human connection, offering a gentle counterbalance to the heaviness of modern life.
Her paintings can now be found in both private and public collections. Today, her work is represented by several galleries in Belgium and abroad. Earlier this year, the Dutch magazine Ariadne at Home described her work as “Little moments of happiness on large canvases”
