About this artwork
Between Surrender & Glory is a monumental painting (200 × 100 cm) in which surrender unfolds into light. Inspired by the cantata Olivet to Calvary, the work is conceived as a biblical landscape, tracing an inner passage from the Mount of Olives to the place of the empty tomb.
At its centre, a vertical line of gold moves decisively through the fractured surface, separating two distinct realms. The left side reflects surrender,… while the right opens into redemption and hope. This line does not merely divide, but marks a passage, a moment of transition.
The surface is built through layered materials and sculptural processes, incorporating olive trees, fragments of Bible text and stones gathered at the foot of Table Mountain. These elements are embedded within the craquelé, emerging through a process of construction, reduction and revelation.
Fracture, matter and light converge in a restrained yet powerful composition.

My work is rooted in Christian faith, not as a theme, but as a foundation. I believe that brokenness is not the end of a story. It is where the most honest part begins.
The craquelure in my paintings is not manufactured. It grows. I build up layers until they fracture organically and unpredictably. Then I paint each crack by hand with Lascaux gold paint, one by one. No two surfaces are ever the same.
Gold is not decoration. It is the light that enters through brokenness.
