About this artwork
Row upon row, receding into dark with no visible end, each Jizō holds the same expression:
open, unbothered, unconditional.
Compassion in its permanent state.
Jizō stands at every threshold that terrifies us.
Birth. Death. The border between suffering & what comes after.
He carries a staff to open the gates of hell and a jewel to light what cannot be seen.
He made a vow: not to rest until every suffering… being had been brought through.
He has not rested.
These figures were placed here by people who needed to believe something waits at the crossing.
Mothers. Travelers. Those carrying grief with no name for it.
Each stone face is someone's last hope made permanent.
"Mercy Without Condition" is a photograph of the oldest human question: is anyone there?
And the answer, row upon row into the dark, is the same.
Still here. Still counting.
