In three separate picture planes, Spina weaves a complex “poem of images.” Each space references items that were dear to his heart. He starts in the upper left corner with a nod to his childhood and the enjoyment of going to the movies. The center is a tribute to two of his favorite artists, Seurat and Millet. And finally on the right is one of the many objects at hand in his studio, a plastic fly, which has made several appearances in his work.… Finally, he borders this scene with two onlookers. On the left is a Pinocchio character and on the right a very shark-like profile. Their ominous tone threatens art. The viewer must ask themselves if they are indeed one of the onlookers or part of the preciousness of life.
The viewer must question themselves. Are they a part of this ominous duo that seems to threaten art? Or are they part of the joy of this world?
Manhattan artist Paul Spina (1937-2017) was a masterful painter and visual artist with a BFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. He drew on a rich background steeped in both commercial illustration and fine art exhibitions across major American cities. He employed strong draftsmanship, vivid color, dramatic perspective, expressive line, and found objects, blending influences from Rembrandt to Pollock—his work bursts with movement and biting visual harmony, often overlaying personal iconography. His paintings channel intense emotion and personal history, inviting viewers to experience the complexity of joy, loss, and outrage, and challenging them to confront complacency and the darker truths lurking beneath society’s surface.
