About this artwork
This original oil painting on canvas is a contemporary portrait of an African boy, painted with figurative realism and surrounded by expressive abstraction. I wanted his gaze to be the anchor—quiet, direct, unshaken—while everything around him moves like a storm of colour.
I built the face slowly, with a classical patience, then let the background speak in sweeping ochres, crimson, green and electric blue. Down below, the thick impasto texture rises… like cracked earth—something tactile, almost ancestral—so the painting doesn’t float; it stands.
For me this work is about dignity and resilience. The world can be loud, chaotic, beautiful, violent… and still, there can be a calm center that doesn’t break. If you live with this portrait, I hope you feel that steady presence every time you pass by. —Pedro Sanz
