About this artwork
I painted this original oil painting as a contemporary figurative portrait—part classical realism, part abstract portrait. I wanted the face to feel calm and present, while everything around it stays in motion: red roses slipping in and out of the dark, warm terracotta and burgundy, and quick strokes of colour that feel like memory rather than background.
The gaze is the anchor. I built it slowly, with old-master patience, because I’m drawn to timeless… beauty and that quiet sense of permanence. But I also needed the painting to breathe, so I left the process visible—scrapes, veils, and bold marks—where the image breaks and becomes pure paint again.
For me the roses are not decoration. They’re atmosphere: tenderness, desire, and a little danger, all at once. If you live with this work, I hope it keeps revealing new layers each time you pass by. —Pedro Sanz
Pedro Sanz is a Spanish self-taught oil painter with more than twenty-five years dedicated to his craft. Working through classical underpainting and meticulous layering, he uses transparency and tonal harmony to create images that feel both contemporary and timeless. His portraits are intimate and psychologically charged—less descriptions of a sitter than quiet encounters with inner life.
Stillness and contemplation run through his work. Time appears to slow; emotion is present but understated. Beneath the surface realism lies a subtle spiritual dimension—an invitation to look beyond appearance and enter a space of silence, attention, and presence. Each painting is created with archival materials and delivered with a certificate of authenticity.
