About this artwork
An original oil on linen canvas painted in a traditional style. This painting is realistic and representational yet has hints of impressionism whilst retaining indications of detail within the brushwork.
The location is known as the Lower Pool of London and features Thames Sailing Barges and various commercial shipping on the River Thames c.1900. In the background is the Norman Tower of London together with Tower Bridge which had just been constructed… at the end of the C19th. and glimpses of St. Paul´s Cathedral in the distance. Prior to more docks being created further downstream to accommodate larger ships this stretch of the river was always busy.
Although in recent decades the skyline has changed dramatically the artist can recall spending time onboard Thames Sailing Barges in the 1970s and then just how much of the C19th river frontage still existed.
