About this artwork
A port is a safe place, but it is not the ship's purpose to remain there for long. The harbor crane has finished loading it. Now it is there on the quay ready for departure. Peter Knauer leaves open what the simple ship, loaded to the hull, stands for, whether he is talking about the freighter or the freight that has been loaded onto it and is to be transported to a predetermined destination. The ship can be seen as an archetypal symbol of the journey,…
as a metaphor for life, the sea as a threat, danger, challenge to be overcome and mastered, the container as a symbol of globalization.
In a geometric-abstract style, Peter Knauer designed "Aufbruch IV" in numerous, translucent layers of paint that oscillate between white, delicate blue, pink and orange to strong, dark red and brown tones and allows the abstract elements to become personal in the eye of the beholder story of life growing together.
