About this artwork
A bright, blue field, interspersed with white, that seems to glow from within. Small, troweled tiles are scattered across the entire surface – light blue, petrol, deep navy, interspersed with white and sand. No center, no foreground. To the right of center, a warm, dense cluster of ochre, copper, and brown gathers, the only warm tone in the cool field – a piece of earth peeking through the blue.
I painted this picture intuitively, without any preconceived… notions or intentions. I applied the paint thickly with a palette knife, tone by tone, to a thin ground of lime and marble dust. The thin surface and the thickly applied tiles contrast: the expansive background remains still, while the paint introduces a shimmering quality.
What has emerged is reminiscent of light on water – not the surface itself, but its breaking up into small, bright fragments. The warm, dense texture resembles a piece of shoreline peeking through the blue. Vastness and tranquility, and within it a subtle movement that never ceases.

Petra Maruschek is an abstract painter who works between Düsseldorf and Mallorca. Her work begins with a painting surface made of slaked lime and marble dust. As it dries, it cracks naturally—a process she initiates but does not control. Onto the cracked surface, she applies layer upon layer of highly diluted acrylic glazes, ink, and pigments, sometimes incorporating shellac, rust, or gold pigment. The glazes collect in the crevices, seep into the cracks, accentuate some textures, and conceal others.
Her painting is abstract. The island is not a subject, but a condition – light, silence, heat, the vastness of sky and sea.
Her development was self-taught, but not unguided: several years of instruction with Tomasz Piwarski, a master student of Rissa (Düsseldorf Art Academy).
Exhibitions include Copelouzos Family Art Museum, Athens; Museum of Sóller; Mallorca, Nit de l'Art in Palma, Ses Salines, Llucmajor., Mallorca.
