About this artwork
Here I explore the paradox of hope within confinement. This piece depicts Danaë, mother of Perseus, who was imprisoned by her father, King Acrisius, in an attempt to thwart an oracle’s prophecy. Centered in her cell, Danaë is enveloped by Zeus, who visits and seduces her in the form of a shower of gold. I aim to portray the visitation not as a violation, but as a comforting and protective embrace.
The symbolism of the piece acts as a prophecy for… her eventual liberation. Danae's posture—arms raised in a gesture of surrender and reception—mirrors her internal "leap" toward aspiration, while the surrounding artifacts represent the events that will guarantee her and her son's 'escape'. Through layered acrylics, the "shattered" golden light becomes a divine intervention, transforming her solitary confinement into a sanctuary of promise. It is a meditation on resilience and the belief that even in the most restricted circumstances, a higher light can reach us and rewrite our destiny.
« I express the truest version of myself as I was, am, and will be in my work. »
