About this artwork
At first glance, the composition suggests a film noir scene of voyeurism and isolation. A woman sits bathed in a harsh, artificial glow—appearing vulnerable and trapped against a dense, obsidian void—while a… shadowy figure looms on the balcony behind her. However, the piece plays with the idea that things are rarely what they seem. Upon closer inspection, the dark shadow across her eyes and a subtle, knowing smile suggest a different story. Rather than a victim of obsession, she may be the one entirely in control, orchestrating the gaze of the figure behind her.
Through this subversion of the "damsel in distress" trope, the work explores the blurred lines between being watched and being witnessed, and the hidden strength found in silence.
