About this artwork
This piece is a study of actress Monica Bellucci as the title character of the movie ‘Malena’. Malena Scordia is a beautiful war widow in a Sicilian town during World War 2, the object of desire from the men, and of hatred and jealousy from the women, she is effectively punished for her beauty and ostracised by most of the town, thanks to small minded gossip. Destitute and alone, Malena resorts to prostitution in the local brothel.
This pose is… the moment when Malena, recently made over from dark, tragic beauty into flaming haired temptress sits herself at a table and is suddenly flocked to by numerous admirers, each grasping for attention with lighters held out to light her cigarette. I wanted to capture the many layers and micro reactions in her face, and to portray the mix of fear, sadness and resignation in her expression as she accepts her fate.
« I express the truest version of myself as I was, am, and will be in my work. »
