A procession at dusk, silhouettes moving against a luminous horizon.
What the shadows conceal, the context reveals: this isn’t a procession at all. It’s a statue, a permanent fixture in the village of Viggiano, Italy. A village whose paradox is striking. It is rich, not for its beauty or its harp traditions, but for the vast onshore petroleum reserves that lie beneath its soil. This sculpture reaches toward the heavens, the earth below it is being… drained.
This contrast between the reverent, upward symbol of the statue and the resource-driven reality of the land raises a quiet tension. In Viggiano, nature seems to have provided abundantly. The natural beauty of the valley clashes with the invisible machinery of extraction, and this tension becomes central to the artwork: humanity’s dual roles as both stewards and exploiters.
When I captured this, I was drawn to the stillness. Yet beneath the surface lies a modern unease.
Vincent Lecoq, an explorer guided by the poetry of changing spaces, uses photography to share his curiosities. His art is nourished by urban metamorphoses, where the visible and the invisible mingle, to denounce exclusion and question our borders. His images, tinged with freedom, identity and social justice, reveal a harmony hidden behind apparent divisions.
