About this artwork
In this work, the figure isn't painted: it's transferred, and the body, reduced to shadow and vestige, emerges from a white background. The vertical striations of the support and the losses in the transfer create a subtle texture, where the image seems to float between appearance and erasure.
During the process, the artist partially removes the paper, leaving a milky veil that softens the contrasts and provides a patina of time. This physical residue,… far from being a defect, becomes an essential part of the visual language: a metaphor for wear and tear, transition, and the fragility of memory.
Vestigium embodies identity as a process of transformation, the image as a mutating trace. It is a silent and restrained painting that invites the viewer to pause before what persists when form fades.
Raúl Lara is a Spanish artist whose paintings have been exhibited nationally, in the United States, Portugal, France, and the United Kingdom. He describes his art as a search for the representation of who we are in contrast to what others see, in comparison with what we know about ourselves. Lara's recent figurative compositions explore identify and portray the interior self, as well as the self that is shown to others and the world.
