About this artwork
This image shows a neurosurgeon under the light of the operating lamp, in a moment of preparation immediately before the procedure. The actual action remains unseen – the focus is solely on the surgeon's face and concentration.
The light isolates the figure from the surrounding space, creating an almost painterly situation. It reduces the scene to its essence and draws attention to a state of inner focus, where precision, experience, and responsibility… converge.
What interests me about this moment is not the intervention itself, but the presence before it: the silent intensity in which every action is already inherent, without becoming visible.
The title “Exposure” can be read in two ways here – as becoming visible in the light, but also as the responsibility that lies with the person acting at that moment.

Ralf Steinmeier is a photographer with a medical background who worked for many years as a neurosurgeon before dedicating himself entirely to art. His works are created in close proximity to clinical situations—mostly without staging—and are characterized by reduced, clear compositions, precise lighting, and a focus on details and structures. He works with fragmentary, often suggestive framing and a restrained palette. His photographs convey an intense sense of stillness, vulnerability, and the tense balance between technical control and human dependence.
