About this artwork
This image captures a moment of intense concentration during a neurosurgical procedure. The view through the operating microscope is focused on a very small area – everything else fades into the background.
What interests me about this situation is the complete focus: the reduction to the essentials, in which every movement counts and every distraction is excluded. In this state, a special form of presence arises, which is hardly visible outwardly,… but determines the entire process.
The image makes this focused gaze visible without showing the actual intervention. It is not about the action itself, but about the attitude behind it – about attention, precision, and the responsibility borne in that moment.
My work attempts to make precisely these often invisible states tangible: the quiet intensity that lies behind a highly technological environment.

Ralf Steinmeier is a photographer with a medical background who worked for many years as a neurosurgeon before dedicating himself entirely to art. His works are created in close proximity to clinical situations—mostly without staging—and are characterized by reduced, clear compositions, precise lighting, and a focus on details and structures. He works with fragmentary, often suggestive framing and a restrained palette. His photographs convey an intense sense of stillness, vulnerability, and the tense balance between technical control and human dependence.
