About this artwork
This image depicts a moment during an interventional procedure in which multiple levels of perception overlap. The direct view of the body recedes into the background; instead, screens, data, and visual representations determine orientation.
What interests me about this situation is the dissolution of a clear-cut reality. The scene does not consist of a clearly defined space, but rather of a multitude of simultaneously existing layers: reflection,… monitor image, and physical presence overlap and can no longer be clearly distinguished from one another.
The surgeon becomes part of this system. His perception is no longer direct, but mediated – guided by images that accompany and enable the procedure.
The image thus shows less an action than a structure: a complex interplay of technology, perception, and decision-making.

Ralf Steinmeier is a photographer with a medical background who worked for many years as a neurosurgeon before dedicating himself entirely to art. His works are created in close proximity to clinical situations—mostly without staging—and are characterized by reduced, clear compositions, precise lighting, and a focus on details and structures. He works with fragmentary, often suggestive framing and a restrained palette. His photographs convey an intense sense of stillness, vulnerability, and the tense balance between technical control and human dependence.
