About this artwork
This image captures a moment that normally remains invisible. During neurosurgical surgery, the skull is opened – a highly precise, technically controlled procedure. For a brief instant, fine bone dust is released into the light.
What interests me about this scene is not the intervention itself, but the special quality of this moment: the simultaneity of absolute control and the fundamental vulnerability of the human body.
The suspended dust makes… visible something that otherwise remains hidden. It represents the material reality of the body, but also the fragility of this situation. The image thus oscillates between precision and resolution, between technical action and an almost immaterial impression.
My work does not attempt to explain the medical process, but rather to create access to a moment in which concentration, responsibility, and vulnerability converge.

Ralf Steinmeier is a photographer with a medical background who worked for many years as a neurosurgeon before dedicating himself entirely to art. His works are created in close proximity to clinical situations—mostly without staging—and are characterized by reduced, clear compositions, precise lighting, and a focus on details and structures. He works with fragmentary, often suggestive framing and a restrained palette. His photographs convey an intense sense of stillness, vulnerability, and the tense balance between technical control and human dependence.
