About this artwork
In the wall object "Layering" I joined unevenly sawn, precisely worked and stained oak boards with their broad sides so close together that each one forms a block. Here the materials themselves have an effect, in their pressed together appearance and in the energy condensed within them. In this way I give my materials a special tension. The wall object consists of two units that are hung a short distance apart. Düsel is a keen observer of nature.… He selects the woods for his work with great precision, because each type of wood has a different structure, a different texture that he responds to, which he changes by flaming or varnishing, which he plays with. They are often arranged in such a way that they appear to float, even though he often uses heavy materials such as steel or dense wood. He attaches great importance to his work being simple and reduced.
René Düsel, a painter and sculptor, primarily uses materials such as wooden panels, oak, beech and poplar wood and manipulates metal. He combines hand and machine processing techniques, creates relief structures and leaves room for numerous interpretations. Düsel's works communicate grace and aesthetics, creating a tension between concentrated intervention and release. His works of art float on an emotional level, filled with diverse forms of expression and surprising interpretations.
