Black Everyday presents a striking, high-contrast portrait where light and shadow sculpt the face into a powerful, almost iconic form. The black-and-white treatment removes distraction and focuses attention on texture, presence, and gaze. The phrase “I am black every day” anchors the image in a direct, unapologetic statement of identity one that is constant, visible, and inescapable.
The work plays on the tension between visibility and reduction:… the subject is monumentalized, yet also flattened into graphic contrast, echoing how Black bodies are often perceived through simplified, imposed narratives. By borrowing visual codes from advertising and editorial imagery, Sar La Rouge transforms admiration into questioning what does it mean to be seen, and who controls that gaze?
Both intimate and political, the piece invites reflection on identity as lived experience rather than representation, confronting the viewer with a presence that cannot be ignored or abstracted.

I’m Sar La Rouge, a Franco-Togolese digital artist working at the intersection of photography, collage, and emerging technologies. Based in Cape Town for over a decade, I’ve developed a visual language where digital images and physical forms interact, questioning how images circulate, how they are consumed, and how they shape our identities.
Self-taught, my work grows from a personal archive of photographs that I transform through digital collage into layered, poetic compositions. I see my practice as a form of “digital folk art”: intuitive, fluid, and constantly evolving.
I explore themes of feminism, technology, and politics, reflecting the tensions of contemporary life. Starting from the personal, my work expands into more universal narratives of resilience and awareness.
Today, I extend my practice into physical prints, while also working with video and AI. For me, the digital space remains an open field of experimentation, without boundaries.
