About this artwork
In this work, I explore the feeling of inner density and weight. The forms are layered and shifted within one another, as if they support and simultaneously define each other. Nothing dissolves; everything remains contained.
The composition doesn't develop in one direction, but rather condenses at its center. Areas of color overlap, forming a structure of pressure, resistance, and stability. Red tones and earthy nuances enhance the physical presence,… while cooler areas absorb and dissipate tension.
I am not interested here in movement in the sense of dynamism, but in concentration. The work maintains a state – calm, but not light. Weight does not appear as a burden, but as an inner structure that provides form and support.
Sophie Lehniger works primarily with acrylics and oil pastels on untreated canvas, drawing on her background in law and art history for her artistic practice. Using techniques such as layering, condensation, and reduction, she develops abstract forms characterized by repetition, variation, and visible traces of manual intervention. Her works radiate a profound tranquility and inner tension, inviting viewers to experience moments of pause and focused perception without offering a definitive resolution.
