I spent 35 years living at the end of a country road in North Idaho where my family hung several bird feeders and I was able to enjoy our feathered friends. It wasn't until you were able to wander into the wilderness that you could see how the birds actually lived. A friend of mine took a picture of a nest in a tree and I took lichen that had fallen to the ground, brought it into my studio and used her reference, the birds visiting and the lichen… to create this lovely painting. At the time, my son was getting ready to leave home and I felt like all I did was feed him and clean up after him. I was excited for the day when he left home to spread his wings and truly become the amazing person I see today. I did feel more like an Air Bed and Breakfast than a parent at the time. After doing research into Hairy woodpeckers and Downeys as well, I found that the nest my friend had captured would work for either one. The colors of the tree, with the soft greens in the lichen were amazing.
