About this artwork
'Modern Hell' is a terrifying interpretation of how the world seems to be spinning out of control. A screaming open-void of a mouth yawps out in maddened howls; the figure simultaneously pulling its chest apart to reveal row after row of consigned slave working at a computer with the face of Dowdeswell's interpretation of Big Brother. The painting breathes and exhales between surreal and brutal abstractions; it is a tale of ghouls and ghosts, lightening…
strikes, the tall-tailed, oft-ignored lessons of history. It is a battle ground for coins, dollar bills, power and autonomy with references to the horrors of WW2 and totalitarianism through to the threat of modern imperialism and subsequent terrorist reaction. Yet there is hope and optimism within the milieu of chaos and disorder; superheroes arriving from the green shoots of renewed life in the top right hand corner. The message being, despite our ills and violent idiocy we have the capacity for renewal and change. Hope remains.
