About this artwork
Dark, shadowy and comic book esq these 'Vortescape' images were inspired by train and bus journeys taken from Bristol to London and are fictional snapshots of scene I witnessed and imagined while gazing out of the window whizzing through the streets or stuck in traffic. The worker in the shop window, the speeding motor bike, the strangers talking in a bar or in the street. The city is the hub of modernity and in it all the trappings, victories…
and failings of the human condition. I divided this image into three loose sections, lower, middle and upper. The lower plane is that of the social underclass, the poor, the ignored in their tower blocks, their prisons, lining up for a day at the factory. The middle plane is the realm of the middle class with bland suburbia, commuting and shopping at the Mall. The upper plane is that of the wealthy elite with their stock and shares, clinging on to victorious power via Big Brother, bright lights, subjugation and warfare.
