About this artwork
Location: Seven Sisters, Sussex, UK
During my travels, the Seven Sisters had cropped up time and again in myths and legends. In antiquity, they were seen as nymphs, the personification of natural powers which protected their places like benevolent spirits and helped humans. It was just a short walk from our cottage to the cliffs. The wind dispersed the clouds and tousled our hair. The nymphs were well disposed towards us. Arriving at the cliffs,… we saw the Seven Sisters stretched out beneath us. There they stood, majestic and timeless, making me catch my breath for a moment. No matter what vantage point I chose to gaze down at these gleaming white vertical cliffs, they seemed to me like a memorial to Zeusʼs passion for Europa and I felt I was very close to the realm of the gods.
