Location: Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia
With more than 10,000 square kilometres, the "Salar de Uyuni" is the largest salt pan in the world. It is located at an altitude of around 4,000 metres, making it the highest salt desert on the planet. The snow-white salt crust was formed over 10,000 years ago by the drying up of the Tauca paleo lake. The brine beneath the crust reaches up to 121 meters in depth.
With glaring brightness during the day and very cold… nights, the Salar resembles a frozen lake on the outside. It is virtually devoid of any living creatures but is a breeding ground for some species of flamingo found only in South America.
The photo was taken during the rainy season, which begins in December. Then the Salar can be covered with several centimetres of water. The still water then forms a huge mirror and creates a surreal space. Standing in the middle of the salt desert, you lose all sense of time & space.
The image is also available in a smaller format as an edition of 7
