Location: White Sands National Monument, New Mexico, USA
We were heading for the White Sands National Monument, some 25 kilometres south-west of the town. At a height of about 1,230 metres, the gleaming white gypsum sand dunes extend across more than 700 square kilometres, forming the world’s largest gypsum dune field. The large quantities of gypsum meant that the sand hardly gave way under our feet, carrying us through a fascinating play of light… and shadow created by the ever-changing angle of the sun. Apache legend has it that, after sunset, when the wind whirls the sand and draws it like a veil across the dunes, Pavla Blanca comes to life – the ghost of a bride who roams the gleaming dunes in perpetual search of her lost betrothed.
