Location: Zao Onsen, Japan
“YOU GOTTA COME NOW!!!” Lee Ponzio gave us the green light – loudly, in capital letters and with a series of exclamation marks. I had been at the ready for weeks, waiting for this email. I had wanted to photograph the “Juhyo” the previous winter, but the formation of the snow monsters of Zao Onsen depends on a highly fragile weather phenomenon – and I had missed it. It requires ice- cold air from Siberia for heavy snowfalls… to transform the trees in the mountains of Japan into an enchanted army which seems to have been frozen while on the march. The snow monsters thaw again as quickly as they were formed. They may reappear – or not – and no weather forecast is precise enough to enable anyone to plan such a journey well in advance. This year, I decided to play it safe. I had found my own personal “weather man” in the form of Lee Ponzio, the snowboard teacher at a local ski school.
