About this artwork
I first painted with a pigment mixture that comes from the scoria of the Piton de la Fournaise volcano in Reunion Island. It is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. I then gilded the "DOOOONG" with real 22.5 carat gold leaf. With very soft sandpaper, I revealed the textured spiral of the painting underneath. The work is varnished with fossil amber, the dissolution of which I control.
The work is therefore charged across the millennia with… the creative volcanic power of Reunion Island, the gold of Canada and the amber of the Baltic, like a world tour across millions of years.

Victor Abel, a Canadian artist living in Réunion Island, explores the relationship between material, gesture, and light.
