About this artwork
Arrested Envelopment is a study in contradiction — structure held in check, emergence halted in midstream. The composition began as an intuitive layering of textured surfaces, where the material dictated the direction as much as my intent. The central panel evolved into a dialogue between concealment and revelation: torn corrugation and smooth plaster coexist with punctuated color and embedded pattern, each surface suggesting a halted evolution or… an incomplete formation.
This piece embodies raw, earthy energy through layered textures of cement and acrylic, evoking resilience and transformation. The interplay of muted tones with vibrant pigments and vivid red accents creates a dynamic tension that sparks curiosity. William Hall, an American painter and sculptor with a background in experimental art and formal training at the University of Texas, melds painting and sculptural techniques into striking “wall reliefs.” He works primarily with masonry materials—cement, grout, mortar, plaster—invoking the tactile quality of earth itself, often employing casting, pouring, polishing, and acid staining for infinite textures. Inspired by the raw mechanics of the natural world and his Native American heritage, he seeks to evoke awe, inviting the viewer to experience the meditative surrender and serendipity present in his artistic process.
