About this artwork
The Conqueror Chief Tcheugué is a work inspired by the biographical stories of ordinary men and women who managed to give meaning to their lives by rising socially in a professional field that was not intended for them. It is the story of these anonymous people, brothers, friends, neighbors, and acquaintances from here and elsewhere, whose lives stand as a living testimony of courage and exploits.
As a painter, I appropriate their stories to question… the notion of resilience and courage in an often difficult life context, marked by the impact of a stolen childhood, trauma, and poverty. I question their ability to bounce back from dramas and to exist socially. The canvas becomes a space for poetic dialogue where past and present mingle, in order to highlight their biographical stories of life journeys, giving them a legendary pharaonic posture.
For me, the Egyptian crown symbolizes courage.
I am a self-taught visual artist of Cameroonian nationality, I paint the human condition through childhood, resilience, resistance and identity are my favorite themes. My style mixes realism, comic book illustration, narrative figuration and borrowings from art history, creating a dreamlike and emotional universe. Trained at the Kanganyam Viking workshop in Douala, I have been exhibiting around the world since 2009, including a solo at the Sakhile Me gallery in Germany in 2021 with "Stolen Childhood". I represented Cameroon at the 7th Francophone Games in Nice in 2013 and won several awards, including the UNRISD prize in 2023. My works are featured in prestigious collections, such as the Gandur Foundation for Art and the Hood Museum of Art at Dartmouth. Since 2020, I have been represented by the Sakhile Me gallery based in Frankfurt, Germany.
