About this artwork
Skyfield comes from a real place, though by the time the painting was finished it had shifted into something more remembered than observed. The land was quiet and still that morning, with the sky carrying most of the movement. The light took its time to arrive, and the colours unfolded slowly across the horizon.
I was not looking for exactness, only to hold the calm of a day just beginning. The forms are reduced and the colour kept soft, letting… the atmosphere settle gently over the scene. It is a simple composition shaped more by mood than detail, part of my ongoing interest in pared-back, poetic landscapes.
Wolfango Chiappella is an Italian-born painter based in Buckinghamshire, UK. Raised in the Piedmont countryside, his work is shaped by a lifelong familiarity with rural landscapes and the quiet edges of towns. He paints primarily in oil on panel or canvas, using restrained colour, softened forms, and an emphasis on atmosphere.
His paintings often begin with real places, fields, paths, waterways, or overlooked corners, but shift in the studio towards simplified, pared-back compositions. Rather than describing a location, his work focuses on stillness, distance, and the weight of light and weather. Drawing on landscapes from both Italy and England, his paintings sit between observation and memory, offering calm, reflective spaces that feel held rather than explained.
