Why did this type of art experience such a rapid upswing in the post-war period? On the one hand, it was possible to build on the Bauhaus art and continue its achievements in the spirit of reparation. With their glorification of the depiction of workers, farmers and soldiers, National Socialist and Communist art made a clear statement (propaganda) that people in post-war Germany wanted to… distance themselves from. Art that made no reference to everyday life, that took no position, that remained neutral, that said nothing, was a perfect fit for the time of the economic miracle. Victor Vasarely, Bridget Riley and other Op artists and Constructivists filled office corridors and executive offices with images that were not controversial and that no one could take offense at.
