About this artwork
In My Beauty, My Complication, I explore the idea of beauty as something manufactured rather than natural. The figure in the painting becomes part human and part machine, moving slowly across a dreamlike landscape made from layers of cosmetic color.
The ground beneath the figure suggests a mud bed of foundation and concealer, while the surrounding colors echo cosmetic palettes used to shape and alter the face and body. The elongated yellow leg represents… the impossible proportions often expected by modern beauty standards.
A single observing eye watches over the scene, raising the question of who defines beauty and what is authentic. Even the exaggerated lashes resemble instruments or mechanisms of adornment.
Through fragmented geometry and vivid color, the painting reflects the tension between individuality and the powerful cultural forces that manufacture ideals of perfection.

My roots in African American and Puerto Rican heritage infuse my vibrant styles with vibrant cultural storytelling. My work weaves together contemporary abstraction, urban folk narrative, and Afro-Caribbean symbolism. My working class parents were both creative people, he was an aspiring screenwriter, she was an aspiring fashion designer, they raised me in East Harlem NYC. I was a shy, introverted child with a lot of imagination. By my early twenties I worked my way through fashion and art school. Painting since I was 15, 40 years later I'm finally comfortable in my creativity and have devoted myself to exploring subjects and topics of interest to me. I'm neurodivergent so my styles vary, greatly.What brings me joy is knowing that I am contributing beauty and a piece of my heritage to those sophisticated enough to appreciate it.
