Sofia Battisti: Small Turning Points - curated by Natalie Slater

A curation by Natalie Slater, Curator at Singulart - Sofia Battisti creates strange, colorful worlds where everyday experience and imagination seem to exist side by side. Animals wander through forests, unfamiliar plants grow around pools of water, comets cross the sky, and figures appear in moments that feel somewhere between an event and a dream. Many of these paintings begin with small experiences from daily life—moments that shifted something, even slightly. Battisti takes those moments and moves them into an entirely different setting, using color, animals, and imagined landscapes to give them another life. There is often something happening, but we are never given the whole story. That ambiguity is part of what makes the work so compelling. The paintings can feel playful and almost idyllic at first, but there is usually something stranger underneath. A landscape changes, something falls from the sky, a figure disappears into its surroundings. Battisti leaves us inside these worlds without quite explaining them, where even a small event can alter everything around it.
