About this artwork
This Emotive range of paintings Andrew has started features a person, either male or female, in a trenchcoat out walking in inclement weather...bracing themselves against the elements.
The brushstrokes are looser, more textured and a lot of mood is created by the misty weather rolling in...One can imagine the wind tugging at her coat and hair, the cold against her face as the storm approaches....
If the viewer looks carefully one can see subtle angel… wings in her shadow; a tribute to all those 'angels' walking amongst us in our everyday lives.
Andrew Cooper is a self-taught artist born in Cape Town, whose work blends semi-realism with a strong sense of mysticism. His paintings are known for their bold use of colour, attention to light, depth and scale, and for creating a distinctive mood and atmosphere. Working from memory and his own photographs, he seeks to capture the essence of a place rather than a literal representation.
Painting professionally since 1987, Andrew began with watercolours before transitioning to acrylics. Deeply inspired by the landscapes of the Western Cape—its mountains, coastlines, rivers, winelands and semi-desert—nature remains the core subject of his work. Alongside these landscapes, his more mystical paintings explore imagination, mythology and the spiritual side of life.
Grounded and humble by nature, his approach to painting is sincere and unpretentious, inviting viewers to step into expansive, immersive scenes shaped by both observation and intuition.
