About this artwork
Its title comes not from the photographic reference or the subject matter used, but from the process the portrait underwent, from its first layer in graphite, through successive phases in acrylic, wax, and oil; scraping, removing, and adding until it reached its current state. The final image evokes a person emerging with fortitude from the shadows. It represents the inner complexity of the human soul, between light and shadow, clarity and diffuseness.…
Using oil, pencil, and pastel, I blended realism with impressionist and semi-abstract touches to show that silent struggle and the strength that emerges. This painting leaves no one indifferent: it encourages one to wonder about the story behind the image.
