THE VEILING, a fine art print of a black and white photograph of the Persian Gulf, colored with egg white glaze and acrylic paint. Brushes and a veil stencil were used. Photographed in 2015, painted in 2023. Signed and stamped. A handwritten text is incorporated: "You wear the niqab, it veils the world from your eyes. It is the world of men. You can see it. But your body remains hidden from it. It does not see you. Your long robe, abaya, and your… headscarf, your hijab, have become your second skin. You hide behind it. It protects you. Because the world out there is full of prohibitions and restrictions. Your full-body camouflage is symbolic of ultra-Orthodox Islam. With its intolerance and fanaticism, it is a kind of declaration of war against the liberal values of the Western world. Did you choose the veil? Or was it forced upon you? Were you ever free?"
Thomas Ruhl works as a painter and photographer with a background in graphic design, photography, and journalism. He masterfully combines black-and-white photography with hand-colored elements, often complemented by literary texts, thereby bringing historical coloring techniques back into contemporary art. His style moves at the intersection of photography, painting, and literature, always aesthetic and critical at the same time. His works tell moving stories of people worldwide and invite the viewer to empathy, humanity, and sensitive reflection. Ruhl has received numerous international awards for his work. His pieces have been presented in group and solo exhibitions and at art fairs. After studying art, financial difficulties initially drove him into advertising. This was followed by the founding of the publishing house Port-Culinaire, which established itself at the top end of the market with a magazine and culinary books. Now he devotes himself exclusively to art.
