About this artwork
In creating Opus III – Cause and Effect, I wanted to push the vocabulary I’ve developed in my earlier Opus works into a more dynamic, almost kinetic space. The surface became a kind of record of forces meeting one another — scraped, pressed, torn, and layered gestures that register both action and aftermath.
I relied on my familiar materials — plaster, cement, and improvised tools — but used them with more force and less predictability, letting their… natural behavior guide the composition. The resulting textures, ridges, and embedded impressions feel to me like traces left behind by a process rather than a planned image.
William Hall, an American painter and sculptor with a background in experimental art and formal training at the University of Texas, melds painting and sculptural techniques into striking “wall reliefs.” He works primarily with masonry materials—cement, grout, mortar, plaster—invoking the tactile quality of earth itself, often employing casting, pouring, polishing, and acid staining for infinite textures. Inspired by the raw mechanics of the natural world and his Native American heritage, he seeks to evoke awe, inviting the viewer to experience the meditative surrender and serendipity present in his artistic process.
