The Catskill Mts. have frequent snow storms. The windy road in front of my house climbs a mountain and is narrow. When the plow comes by it often piles snow on one's front door step as has happened in the piece "Night Illuminated by Street Light". The street light is actually in my yard, across the street from the house pictured. The street light leans dramatically from outside the picture plane.
Construction of a watercolor collage is a delicate… operation. After the torn paper pieces have been chosen and placed they are sprayed with a fixative to keep the watercolor from being affected by the acrylic sealed and glued to the wood shape. Next the piece is sealed with acrylic and finally covered with wax and buffed. No framing is required; the sealing protects from moisture and light.
Alix Hallman Travis is a painter with a background of formal study at the Cleveland Institute of Art and the Art Students League in New York, working primarily in watercolors and oils. She employs loose, expressive brushwork in watercolor and bold palette knife techniques with oils, preferring whimsy and vibrant, imaginative compositions over strict realism. Her work joyfully captures the life of local communities, radiating optimism and happiness through her signature use of radiant yellows, aiming to evoke the same delight and warmth she feels about the world around her.
