About this artwork
A white rowing boat sits moored at the waterfront, its hull catching the morning light. Behind it, a row of old harbour buildings — ochre, pale blue, terracotta red — line the edge of the water, their colours reflected in the broken surface below.
This painting is part of my Mediterranean series, painted from memories of the Venice. I was drawn to the stillness of harbour scenes: the boat that is going nowhere yet, the buildings that have stood… for centuries, the water that holds everything in a loose, shifting reflection.
The brushwork is loose and expressive throughout, especially on the water's surface, where light breaks into fragments. Oil on canvas, 24 × 30 cm.
Anita Szabó, a Budapest-based Hungarian painter, masterfully works in both acrylic and oil, drawing from her formal training and vivid Mediterranean memories. Her style blends representational painting with expressive color, alternating between luminous, impressionistic seaside landscapes and structured, graphic office scenes. She deliberately contrasts visible, tactile brushwork with atmospheric light and shadow, emphasizing the tension between longing and presence. Her art radiates a bittersweet yearning for sanctuary and beauty, inviting viewers to feel both the warmth of the Mediterranean and the quiet, often humorous, alienation of modern workspaces.
