About this artwork
Three beach towels lie spread out on the sand — a yellow one printed with a summer scene, a bold blue one with a lifesaver heart, a pale one scattered with sea turtles and starfish. No people. Just the evidence of them.
This painting is part of my Mediterranean series, which grew out of the lockdowns of 2020–2021, when travel became impossible and the holiday existed only in memory. I was drawn to this subject because of what beach towels represent:… the moment of arrival. You lay them down, you claim your small square of the world, and for a few hours nothing is required of you except to be there.
The composition is a close, slightly elevated view — as if you have just walked up and are about to sit down. The sand is warm and textured. The shadows anchor the scene. Oil on canvas, 70 × 50 cm.
