Veil of Memory emerged from my long-standing exploration of memory, time, and the hidden layers of human experience.
For this work, I developed and processed all the materials myself. On a canvas base, freehand machine-embroidered iris foil, painted and pleated silks, hand-stitched structures, and transparent glazes of fine metallic pigments combine to create a multi-layered surface.
I am not interested in perfect repetition, but rather in the… uniqueness of each material and its ability to reveal traces of change. The iridescent surfaces react to light and viewing angle, causing the work to constantly shift between visibility and mystery. Textile lines, densities, and organic forms evoke root systems, networks of memory, or hidden landscapes.
Like many of my works, this piece also moves between painting, textile art, and sculpture. It invites closer inspection.
Anke Pradel-Schönknecht uses textile materials as well as painting, collage, and mixed media – her creative path led her from classical painting through studies in textile and surface design to experimental textile art. With sophisticated techniques such as dyeing, printing, sewing, and layering diverse materials, she creates three-dimensional relief images and art quilts that combine tactile and visual stimuli. Her artworks convey curiosity, sensuality, and a captivating depth; they invite viewers to understand structures not only visually but also emotionally.
